On 26–27 November 2016 in Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, the 1st Global Sustainable Transport Conference will be held under the aegis of the United Nations. This Conference is being convened on the initiative of the UN Secretary-General and will be a historic meaning, since issues of a world transport will be discussed here on a global basis for the first time, and perspectives of its development will be shaped in the context of the recently adopted UN Global Sustainable Development Program 2030.
Turkmenistan, being a country situated between Asia and Europe, attaches prime importance to the creation of a modern transport system and closely cooperates with neighbouring countries in the development of regional transport links through North-South and East-West. At the global level, Turkmenistan initiated broad dialogue on the development of international transport corridors and two Resolutions of the UN General Assembly were supported by a great number of countries and were adopted in December 2014 and December 2015.
At the Conference and The Transport Business Summit that is planned on the next day, 27 November 2016, a wide range of issues related to the development status and perspectives of all types of transport (air, motor, railroad and marine) will be considered. A range of subjects proposed for discussion will include investments in basic and auxiliary infrastructure to environment and safety issues. Please see the Agenda for more detailed information.
Most of meetings of the Conference and the Summit will be held interactively and will provide opportunity for broad exchange of opinions and experiences. In addition, participants can visit an exhibition where leading world manufacturers will present their vehicles and equipment. Moreover, if desired, the organizers will facilitate bilateral meetings as well as meetings with representatives of the transport sector of Turkmenistan as part of the Summit business program.
It is expected that high-ranking official delegations from many countries, senior officials of the UN Secretariat and its specialized institutions, international organizations, as well as heads of the biggest international corporations representing different types of transport modes and transport-associated industries will participate in the Conference and the Summit.
